„Digital Learning“ in Nigeria

@picnic last month in Amsterdam they’ve held a subconference „Surprising Africa“ – a very special and colorful event. I really enjoyed being there. Ethan Zuckerman, one of the keynote speakers and a great Africa fan, said: „Africa is surprising to those who don’t know it!“ (see his comments on the event here). And I guess he is right.

„Surprising Africa“ communicated a diverse range of projects and initiatives – and it presented a generation of young, educated Africans who are willing to take the future of their continent in their own hands (details you fill find also on the Butterfly foundation website here, and here is the flickr photostream of the event).

My attention was caught by Uju Ofomata from Nigeria. Uju is project manager of „Learning about Living„, a two-year project to help inform and engage young people in Nigeria on issues around sexual health, HIV and AIDS, maternal morbidity and gender violence.

Learning about Living comprises an e-learning tool that forms part of the Nigerian Family Life and HIV/AIDS Education (FLHE) school curriculum. The project was born in February 2007 as a collaboration between OneWorld UK, key Nigerian health NGOs and Butterfly Works in the Netherlands.
